ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM Review

With an increasing number of HD and QHD displays, the never-ending race for the best will not end soon. The plethora of larger 27-inch displays in the market are there to serve the gamers and graphics designers. However, the 165 Hz rate they provide is outdated due to the introduction of revolutionary technologies.

One such example is ASUS Rog Swift PG279QM, a remarkable 240 Hz display accompanied by speed and smoothness. It effortlessly achieves the speed at 1440p and is faster than most 165 Hz displays I have seen in the past. The extremely high refresh rate is best for the gamers as it provides low input lag. The inclusion of the native G-Sync support makes the monitors versatile with diverse gradient handling.

Image Quality

When playing games, gamers want to get the most out of them from a visual and audio standpoint. A 27″ screen with a high refresh rate ensures a smooth gaming experience, and that’s where the PG279QM from Asus comes in. The monitor is great for fast-paced games and has Nvidia G-SYNC compatibility, so you see the actual happening in the game. It has a 1440p resolution while offering the screen space that you need for gaming with a perfect 108 PPI pixel density.

The IPS panel is not ordinary in the ASUS ROG Swift as it offers 178-degree wide angles for a stunning display. The wide viewing angles support 100% Adobe RGB gamut coverage, providing vibrant and saturated colors for cyan, green, and blue.

The ASUS PG279QM eliminates the over-saturation as it has the default enabled sRGB emulation. It provides an excellent viewing angle that makes the content pleasing to view with the sRGB color space in mind. You are about to experience the professional-grade Delta E < 2 calibrations for improved visuals out of the box. sRGB mode ensures that you don’t get locked out of settings related to pictures. It gives access to the settings like color channels, brightness, and more.

If you want to get hands-on with the full Adobe RGB colors, enabling the “Wide Gamut” from the On-Screen Display menu can help. Furthermore, the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM supports HDR and HDR 10. It ensures that users get an immersive display as it carries DisplayHDR 400, a VESA entry-level certification. Overall, it has 16 dimming zones that help make the display more accurate while providing the peak brightness of whopping 550 nits.

As the HDR on the ASUS ROG Swift remains superior over the SDR in most aspects, it remains head-to-head for a few cases. There are 16 dimming zones on its IPS display with a standard contrast ratio of 1000:1. It means that scenes that have dark and bright objects will look crispier and have a significantly better overall display. However, you won’t identify much difference from the SDR display for other demanding scenes.

Performance

The Asus PG279QM is designed for gamers who seek the utmost refresh rates and response times for competitive gaming. The monitor features NVIDIA G-SYNC™ technology for a smooth, tear-free experience with no stuttering and incredibly low input lag. With these excellent features built-in, ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM comes to the forefront as an elite gaming display targeted at all gamers seeking flawless motion graphics to ensure huge advantages in their gameplay.

If you feel it is a hassle to wait for your display’s on and off time, ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM got your back. Its liquid crystal elements make the producer almost four times faster than conventional IPS panels. The 240Hz refresh rate makes it fast for the actions, and it responds swiftly to the commands making it the best 240Hz monitor for gaming. The overall refresh rate and low latency enable the gamers to get an elevated gaming experience with accurate measurements.

The ergonomic design of Swift PG279QM is aesthetically pleasing and practical too. It enables the games to do full swivel, height adjustment, tilt, and pivot without any other equipment. You can adjust the viewing angle according to the position and get a better gaming experience. The game plus hotkey is there to serve you as you can practice and progress better with its help in your favorite games.

Features

ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM interface

There are some nifty features that ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM carries. Some of them are useful for gamers as it addresses the needs of the gaming community.

There are six virtual crosshair options that you can choose for gaming. The advantage of the built-in crosshair is that you can use it for the games without getting detected. It is a lot of upgrade over the software-based crosshair, which games can easily detect.

Another feature in ASUS ROG Swift is the FPS counter that shows real-time frame rate data from the source. Compared to the other FPS counters, the data is more accurate, and you can even get the graph over time.

The dark boost is phenomenal on the ASUS PG279QM as it helps the gamers to detect other objects, players, or enemies in the shadows. It improves the detection in the shadows, letting you spot things clearly in the dark backgrounds.

Besides the software-based features, the hardware features are not limiting in the ASUS ROG Swift. A directional joystick at its rear lets you navigate the OSD menu. Alongside it, there are shortcut keys and a power button to let you operate the display efficiently.

Design and Connectivity

ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM USB ports

The ASUS PG279QM Republic of Gamers Monitor is an aesthetically pleasing display with a classic gaming design. This ASUS 27-inch monitor comes in a satisfying black color and is made from metal and plastic. The monitor’s stand allows the user to adjust its height, tilt and swivel to suit their individual needs. The ROG logo on its lower frame (center) offers a subtle but attractive accent that can fit neatly into any environment without being overpowering or gaudy.

The connections are available on this model under the screen as it directs downwards. It is convenient for people who like to mount the monitor on the bracket. There are four video outputs on the ASUS ROG Swift, including one DisplayPort 1.4 and three HDMI 2.0 ports for connecting multiple sources.

Two USB 3.0 ports let you connect the PC to the display while providing high-speed data transfer. You can also find the 3.5 mm audio output for connecting your gaming headphones for immersive gameplay. If you lift the rubber cover, you can find the service connector along with these ports.

Not only did the manufacturer equip this monitor with a speaker, but they’ve also provided built-in 2-watt stereo speakers to listen to music and videos alike! Not very loud at all, but just enough if you are watching a video such as streams on YouTube. Sometimes external acoustics or headphones can work better if the situation calls for it instead of using your monitor’s built-in speakers.

Price and Similar Monitor

The ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM costs about $900, which is substantially expensive compared to the same models having G-Sync and 240 Hz refresh rate. One similar offering from ASUS is XG27AQM, which is $200 less expensive at the cost of variable overdrive. You don’t get automatic overdrive as you need to change overdrive depending on the need for the refresh rate and compatibility with the G-Sync or FreeSync.

One more shortcoming of the XG27AQM is the absence of dimming zones that are 16 in the ASUS ROG Swift. Moreover, the sRGB is not that flexible, meaning you would get less immersive HDR on this model. Overall, XG27AQM is not wrong if you can sacrifice the variable overdrive and better HDR support.

If you want to experience better HDR performance and HDR pictures, Dell Alienware AW2721D will cater to your needs. It is worth considering the option for even better HDR with 32 dimming zones. It supports 600 nit peak brightness, but the HDR is not comparable to the true HDR displays, and it also lacks sRGB mode.

Conclusion

The ASUS PG279QM is a superb 240 Hz monitor with an exceptional gaming experience. We felt it was more expensive than its competitors but feel most users will agree this is well worth paying a little extra to get the most out of your PC. In my opinion, this monitor is money well spent if you want something that ticks all the right boxes and delivers high performance every time you use it.
